Getting about in Luxembourg
Blog/Getting about in Luxembourg

In the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, having a car is almost as essential as having a mobile phone. In January 2024, the country had more than 678 cars per 1000 inhabitants. Because of the number of cross-border commuters, particularly during the week, Luxembourg's capital city makes you think of a turtle race where nobody gets anywhere.

    Transport in Luxembourg

Are you one of those enthusiasts who puts the planet's well-being first? If so, you’ll be interested in knowing what the Luxembourg government is doing to make your tripsmore environmentally friendly:

    • Is there anything better than going from A to B without having to open your wallet? Did you know that Luxembourg became the first country in the world to make public transport free in March 2020, making it a pioneer in the domain of sustainable mobility? Yes, that’s right: public transport is free! So you can travel for free and hop between the bus, train, funicular and tram across the whole country.

    • Alternative offers include carsharing and the development of bicycle lanes. When it comes to carsharing, you can find all the information on Klaxit by BlaBlaCar Daily, a government-backed carsharing platform. You also have other carsharing websites such as blablacar.fr or pendlerportal.de

    • Have you ever dreamed of driving an electric car? Not a problem; the network of charging stations is in full expansion in order to adapt motorised transport to the challenges of climate change and to facilitate the integration of electric vehicles into the daily life of future generations. Luxembourg’s government often subsidises private charging stations, but it also makes them available in public places such as car parks, motorway service areas, etc. To locate public charging stations on your GPS, visit the chargy.lu website. There you will find the addresses and can see if the charging stations are occupied or not.

Discover the country's beauty by private car

Do you already own a vehicle that you are bringing with you to Luxembourg? Then you will have to do some paperwork to make sure you can drive legally on the road.

Another typical solution would be to buy a brand new car or a second hand car from a car dealership or private individual. If you are tempted to buy a brand new car, we would advise you to do so between January and February. It’s the Automobile Festival, also known as “Autofestival”, which all car sellers in Luxembourg take part in. Everyone loves a bargain, so why not go for it? But if you prefer to buy a second hand car, then wait until June so you can pick up a bargain at the “AutoOccasiounsFestival”.

Whether your car is brand new or second hand, easyPROTECT Auto insurance offers you three different formulas to supplement your compulsory third party insurance. With the Performance formula, you no longer need to worry about the protection of your car. Now, all you have to do is belt up and admire the beautiful landscape as you drive. So, what are you waiting for?

    In need of constant change?

Do you like to change your car as often as you change your socks? Then leasing could be the alternative you're looking for. Although some employers offer it to their employees, there are also private leasing offers that private individuals can take up. Add a few useful options (servicing, tyre changes) and kiss goodbye to unpleasant surprises or unexpected repairs. Meanwhile, there are flexible contract options that can be adapted to suit your personal needs. And the cherry on the cake? LALUX agents work with leasing partners so they can give you special offers to help you find that hidden gem! What’s more, they will help you to protect all the benefits of your easyPROTECT Auto insurance and to continue to take advantage of the service and support of your trusted agent.

Opt for eco mobility and show your green heart

Do you love enjoying nature and saving our beautiful planet?

If so, biking is a great alternative; it’s less costly than a car and good for your health. It’s the new lifestyles and means of mobility that are encouraging this way to travel.  They mean you avoid hellish traffic jams caused by masses of cars at rush hour. Forget about that myth that the car is quicker! Travel time isn't necessarily longer by bike. The new electric bikes will get you from A to B without much effort.

Luxembourg's cycle lane network currently has 600km and will be extended to 950km over the coming years. You can also put your bike on public transport for free, as long as there are spots available, if the journey is too long or exhausting. The bike allows you to travel long distances throughout Luxembourg thanks to the multimodal interchanges provided by the government through bicycle parking, called bikebox(formerly MBoxes) where you can park your bike. Multimodal interchanges give users a quick and easy way to change mode of transport.

Here’s an example of an interchange: you take the tram or bus at “Luxexpo” to cross the Kirchberg Plateau and you get off at “Rout Bréck”. You take the funicular which brings you down to the “Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg” train station. There you can continue on your way by taking the train towards the north of the country or to Luxembourg's central train station. If you prefer to continue your trip by bike, you can use the public bicycles on bike lanes or pick up your private bike from a bikebox.
