    Our carbon footprint

As part of its CSR approach and strategy, LALUX conducted its first comprehensive carbon footprint assessment for the year 2023.

    What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint measures the overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the activities of a company, organization, individual, or even an entire country. It evaluates the environmental impact of activities—particularly the production and consumption of goods and services—by quantifying the GHG emissions linked to those activities.

There are six main greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change at varying levels. To standardize calculations and comparisons of their impacts, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) uses a system called CO2 equivalence, or CO2e. This expresses all emissions as an equivalent of carbon dioxide.

Several recognized protocols and methodologies are used for carbon footprint assessments, such as the GreenHouse Gas Protocol (GHGP), the ISO 14064-1 standard, or the Bilan Carbone® developed by France’s ADEME (Agency for Ecological Transition).

The 3 Scopes of Carbon Footprints

Depending on the calculation scope, a carbon footprint can be categorized as "basic" or "comprehensive." These scopes are typically divided into three levels:

    • Scope 1: Direct GHG emissions resulting from the organization’s activities.
    • Scope 2: Indirect emissions related to energy consumption, primarily electricity.
    • Scope 3: All other indirect emissions, both upstream (suppliers) and downstream (product usage).

LALUX conducted its first comprehensive carbon footprint assessment, encompassing Scopes 1, 2, and 3, based on 2023 data. The most significant contributors to its carbon emissions are:

    • Purchases and services: 2,719 tCO2e, accounting for 52% of the footprint.
    • Office operations/sites: 1,554 tCO2e, representing 29%.
    • Commuting and daily travel: 785 tCO2e, making up 15%.

LALUX aims to reduce its carbon emissions annually. Here is a breakdown of its 2024 emissions:

    • Direct GHG emissions: 640.6 tCO2e
    • Indirect emissions from energy consumption: 476.2 tCO2e
    • Indirect emissions from transport: 586.6 tCO2e
    • Indirect emissions from purchased products: 3,547.9 tCO2e
    • Indirect emissions from sold products: 6.6 tCO2e
    • Other indirect emissions: 0 tCO2e

    Reduction Goals

Although carbon footprint assessments are not yet mandatory, LALUX considers it essential to perform them regularly. This allows the company to monitor its carbon footprint, understand its composition, and develop a practical, realistic, and tailored carbon reduction plan (also known as a "carbon trajectory").

By addressing its responsibilities in this area, LALUX contributes to the collective effort required to achieve progressive but tangible reductions in GHG emissions on both a European and global scale.

    Our future depends on it.
